This fabulously easy-to-make German-style afternoon tea cake is perfect for warming your guest’s hearts and stomachs. The rich cinnamon and chopped nut topping make this a fast favourite.

German Afternoon Tea Cake
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 lemon juice and rind
For Topping
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
- Cream butter and sugar.
- Add the egg and beat further.
- Sift flour and baking powder into the mix. Add milk and lemon juice and rind
- Mix thoroughly, spread the dough in a shallow buttered baking-pan.
- Sprinkle the top with chopped nuts, sugar, cinnamon, and dots of butter.
- Bake until brown and crisp, cut in squares, and serve piping hot.
