German Afternoon Tea Cake

This fabulously easy-to-make German-style afternoon tea cake is perfect for warming your guest’s hearts and stomachs. The rich cinnamon and chopped nut topping make this a fast favourite.

German Afternoon Tea Cake

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 lemon juice and rind

For Topping

  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp cinnamon


  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  • Cream butter and sugar.
  • Add the egg and beat further.
  • Sift flour and baking powder into the mix. Add milk and lemon juice and rind
  • Mix thoroughly, spread the dough in a shallow buttered baking-pan.
  • Sprinkle the top with chopped nuts, sugar, cinnamon, and dots of butter.
  • Bake until brown and crisp, cut in squares, and serve piping hot.
